How to Make Any Outfit Look Expensive
Unfortunately, we don’t all have the budget of a celebrity, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t achieve the same glamorous look. Even if your budget is more charity shop than haute couture, there are plenty of little tips and tricks that you can employ to make any outfit look expensive.
If you’re heading to an important event but you can’t afford to splash out on a designer dress, there’s no need to worry. Instead, read on and find out more about how you can get celebrity style on a shoestring.
The Statement Handbag

It’s amazing what you can do with a standard little black dress as long as you have a statement handbag. It doesn’t need to be expensive, but it doesn’t need to look glitzy. Choose a sparkling and embellished clutch or an understated petite shoulder bag in an elegant satin or velvet fabric and you’ll be able to fool everyone into thinking that your outfit cost a lot more than it really did.
Stylish Jewellery
Any dress will look infinitely sophisticated if you choose the right jewellery to go with it. A matching set is, of course, essential, but remember that quite often, less is more. A set that is entirely encrusted with fake diamonds is probably going to look...well…fake. Instead, go for something plain but elegant with a touch of sparkling detail and you’ll be much more likely to fool your fellow event attendees.
Replace The Buttons
This is an old trick but it still works, especially if you’re dressing up a tired old jacket. The key is to either use a jacket that is already in your wardrobe but which doesn’t have a fashionable edge, or to buy an attractive basic piece which has the potential to look more expensive but which fits into your budget.

Then, all you need to do is take off the boring plain buttons and replace them with some really dynamic, eye-catching ones. Spend a bit of time looking through fashion magazines or on fashion websites to find the latest looks and then go shopping for buttons that look similar to those that you’ve seen adorning the clothing of the rich and famous.
The more unusual the buttons are, the more expensive your outfit is going to look, and as buttons are incredibly cheap to buy you’re going to be getting a couture look at high street prices.
Investing In One Key Piece
Sometimes, it’s worth your while to invest in a single statement piece as an addition to your wardrobe. Choose wisely and make sure that your investment will be a long lasting one. A classically cut black dress is one such purchase that will be brought out of the wardrobe time and again and can be dressed up with different bags, shoes and accessories to look hot and on trend without having to spend a fortune.

Another key piece you might want to invest in is a statement high quality jacket. When worn as part of a trouser or skirt suit or paired with a plain, low-key dress, you’ll immediately take your outfit to the next level and even better, it’ll never go out of style.
Perhaps you’d rather go for the designer pair of heels which will lift and enhance any piece in your closet. If you’re splashing out on an expensive key wardrobe staple, make sure that you save on your other key pieces. The key is to go for versatility and flexibility – timeless classics, in other words. Nicely tailored black trousers, a flattering pencil skirt and a black shift dress that skims your curves can all be bought on the high street for an affordable price, but can all be paired with your luxury statement piece with ease.
Match Your Bag And Shoes
One last tip that works perfectly for any occasion, but especially at formal events, is to match your bag to your shoes. It’s very simple and surprisingly affordable, but as long as your shoes and handbag look like a matching pair, your entire outfit will look infinitely more chic and sophisticated.
